Harmonicon

We invite you to this gathering with a programme of events to consider what folk and rave are and how common elements of our lives are symbiotic. We wonder how we are connected in harmonics and through unseen energetic fields of balance and enquiry. The Harmonicon portal will reignite over Todmorden for a provocative gathering of esoteric wild transcendence. So, being radical and challenging in these times is action we can take to challenge a narrative. Stones and drones harmonise, as they ring the changes to reveal deeper constructs, through unruly visions and collective alignment from a maverick brigade of musicians, speakers, dancers, poets and artists to inspire, delight and inflame. We warmly look forward to experiencing this weekend with you.

Gillan

Ceremony

Our Opening Ceremony with Gillan outside the Church at 6 pm includes a communal shrine: an opportunity for you to bring something to represent your time at Harmonicon, and communal earth sigil creation. Sharing her connection with paganism, Gillan will be conducting the ceremony, honouring the surroundings of Harmonicon through fire, offerings and ancient mediums of crafting.

Please bring something strange, something personal or anything you feel fits the occasion!

You can collect your wristbands at the ceremony

We will then all walk down to Nan Moors for the opening set at 7pm.

Lally Macbeth and Stephen Grindrod

Lally MacBeth is an artist, writer & curator based in Cornwall, England. Lally graduated from Central Saint Martins in 2013 with a First Class Honours in Fashion History & Theory, and has since divided her time between being sensible and silly. Her work wanders the line between the real and the imaginary, taking in history, folklore, performance, ritual, and artifice along the way. She is interested in the links between high and low cultural artefacts and how these lines are often blurred in archives. Lally founded The Folk Archive in 2020, and co-founded Stone Club with Matthew Shaw in 2021. Lally’s first book The Lost Folk is published on June 19th by Faber.

Stephen Grindrod speaks about "No Billy No Mates - a story of friendship, poetry, missteps, solstice and synchronicity. Hear how a profound encounter at the Tree of Life rock carving lead to an incredible sequence of events. An autopoietic adventure that is growing and ongoing. Dan Thorman and Lou Zon

AV Set

Dan Thorman and Lou Zon to play together after their first collaboration at Strange Brew in Bristol earlier this year. They present experimental analogue visuals and semi-improvised modular electronics.

Dan, from the north-east but living in the south-west, is a dj and producer taking inspiration and interest from many art forms and styles of music. His live performance focuses on textures and drones created through granular synthesis and electroacoustic samples, presented alongside hypnotic synth lines from his modular synth and sampled percussion. He writes new sketches and ideas in advance of each of his live sets, and performs them with improvised expression and structure. Each intentional offering is created for a given space and audience. He invites you to a meditative headspace where slowly shifting dynamics create both a sense of focus and drift.

Lou Zon (Louise Boer) is a filmmaker, curator and visual anthropologist teaching at Goldsmiths, University of London. Her work spans documentary, experimental film, music videos and video art, exploring ecology, cultural politics, sound and embodied experience. Through live improvised visuals, she translates sound into immersive, dreamlike landscapes, blending analogue technique with natural elements. She co-curates Free Movements, reimagining the rave through sound, image and deep listening.@dthorman88@lou_zon

Talk - Finding Place

Arriving in Mytholmroyd in 1975 as part of the 'hippie influx, John Billingsley found a local culture very different from his London background, and one that was steadily fading. This led to half a century of investigating local folklore and cultural tradition, and its relation to place - and even to speculative questions about place and ancestry.

Along the way, he has also worked for Calderdale Libraries, edited the neo-antiquarian magazine Northern Earth, been Director of Todmorden's Folklore Centre, given numerous talks, written or edited twelve books, and vainly entertained thoughts of retirement.

Planetary Voices

Kelly Jayne Jones in collaboration with Gemunu de Silva & Gnostic Front.
Artist has requested people bring rocks and stones to the performance!

An experiment in collective active presence and a poetics of listening and being together. This session explores planetary beings and meetings with our inner voices, communing within and beyond the collective state of consciousness.

Through a structured participatory piece, we will connect compassionately and somatically with the sounds of industrialised animal farming—ambient noises, metal clanging, and animal suffering—played alongside live rock instrumentation, field recordings, bells and bowls. Inspired by Brandon LaBelle, we examine how forms of listening can act as a form of collective action, allowing us to feel the inner reverberations wave through our soma.

From these gentle penetrations, we will weave words that voice the inner life’s responses to the external systems and structures that cause harm. Moving from the industrial to the infinite, we will expand our awareness to a wider global listening of the abundance of nature, the profundity of life, and the mystery of all animate energies.

This session involves collective sound-making and movement. It is a supported, held space designed to bring gentle awareness and curiosity to our unique feelings—whether they be anger, sadness, grief, guilt, defensiveness —without forming dogmatic conclusions, nor taking political positions - together we form a boundless collective. All responses are equally valid. Inviting self compassion and compassion for all life.

Trigger Warning & Content Note

This session includes a short audio segment (approximately 10 minutes) near the beginning, featuring field recordings from industrialised animal farming. These sounds—drawn from chicken and egg farms, Angora rabbit fur farms, and facilities using captured monkeys for medical research—will be layered with sound effects and live instrumentation to create an atmospheric experience rather than a graphic or shocking one. Following this listening, we will move into collective sound-making and movement to release and transmute these energies into collective presence, love and care for life.

Kelly Jayne Jones is a Manchester based artist making work that combines performance, installation and sound. She is self taught and began working in DIY experimental noise music and her practice has expanded to include sound installation, dance, gesture, sonic drawings, stone sculpture and film scores.tracksinvestigations.orgkellyjaynejones.orggnosticfront.bandcamp.com

Gnod’s now twenty year journey through spiritual and audial exploration has been driven by relentless curiosity, magpie irreverence and a fierce countercultural imperative, their project has always refused to acknowledge all or any rules and boundaries, internal or external. Thus, the crooked path continues.
At this special show for Harmonicon, the audience are expected to expect the unexpected...gnod.bandcamp.com/music@ingnodwetrust

Sunday

Vic Jay

In this workshop participants will learn to make a simple Brigid’s Cross in a fun, informal environment. Alongside the basics of straw work, including traditional wheat weaving techniques, participants will discover some of the folklore and traditions that surround this ancient craft.

This beginner-level workshop lasts approx. 1 hour and is suitable for people with little to no experience of straw work. All materials provided.

Vic Jay grew up in a small town in Derbyshire where traditional folk practices: making corn dollies, morris dancing, well dressings, and harvest festivals, were a celebrated part of community life. As a child she helped to create the town’s annual well dressing and would perform folk songs with other local children at the ‘grand unveiling’ on the last day of summer term.@vicjay_art

Terry Riley In C

Audience Participatory Performance Facilitated by David Insua-Cao

In C is a composition by Terry Riley from 1964, is one of the most successful works by an American composer and a seminal example of minimalism. In C is in 53 measures in vaying time signatures and with a set of rules to try and stick to, but allows individual variation. You can play slow or fast with however many repititions as you like on any instrument. Some bars are easier than others so it is recommended you look at (and download) the score before hand.

David Insua-Cao is an accomplished freelance drummer, percussionist, and community music leader based in Todmorden, Calderdale, UK. Known for his versatile, boundary-pushing performance style and commitment to music education, his work spans international theater, experimental improvisation, and inclusive community ensemblesyoutu.be/SzDeixDImOE?si=UMC3rwfp1IiIEgmSyoutu.be/YGCp4PPaRSg?si=LFb1OGdU-FBp5L-eyoutube.com/watch?v=GA3Gw3iuFRsteropa.info/blog/2017/01/23/terry-rileys-in-cmusescore.com/crize2foi/in-c-terry-riley

Visual Artists

Amy Payphone

Amy asks, ‘If time was a piece of paper how many times would it fold?’

Stand and see what you see! If reflections reflect themselves, could you open a threshold? Who was it who described mirrors as leaks, as windows to alternate universes?

Amy Payphone (Amy Payton Edwards) is a socially engaging artist and experiential space designer from Todmorden. She has worked at festivals such as Waking Life as a set designer as well as in community centred arts projects across the UK. She invites you to reflect upon her ‘Mirror Portal’, created for Harmonicon, arranged on the ascent to the Unitarian Church, accompanied by a soundscape designed by Dave Walker of EMOM.

Also catch up with Amy on Saturday from 1-4pm at Nan Moors for the ‘Creation Station’ for a tin foil hat making workshop as well as a group frequency drawing session with Miri. Look out for her work around the Church, at 'the Beach' woodland area and into the graveyard.@amy_payton_edwards

Jamie House

Fresh out of a long summer making art installations for everyone and their dogs from Watching trees to Postive Harmony, Jamie will be returning to the Unitarian Church. This time he is bringing the afterburnt harvest produce of a heated summer in the form of a brand new set of visual experiments ready for mixing.

Alongside this, he has been working on the unified duality tapestry hangings you will see around the space, which are an ongoing time based collage 'object'. Starting as an abstract light experiment, the object has been photographed, interpreted, scanned, blurred, and distorted as it is passed between dimensions. It has now manifested itself right down to the 2D realm where it was promptly defaced as things so often are down there. A snapshot of it's latest iteration adorns the hangings.@hamie_jouse

Mark Wagner

Wagner is an artist, creative and mystical practitioner, fascinated by the underlying processes of Life and their practical applications for everyday living.

A specialist in the art of cymatics and its alchemy, he brings them to resonance events as well as making a return to Harmonicon to add live modal vibrational phenomena to illuminate the Unitarian Church with vibration, light & sound.@mark_wagner_33
